Is spring springing where you are? It sure is here in Texas, and I’m here for it! I’ve already started planting flowers and replacing the plants our two freezes claimed. The weather is perfect, and I can’t wait to spend more time outdoors. Apparently, I’m not alone. Annual trend reports show that more homeowners are focusing on outdoor upgrades that bring daily joy. With high interest rates keeping many in place, investing in your yard can create a space that feels happy, whole, and connected. If you’re ready, here are my spring lawn and garden tips to get your yard in shape and make the most of the season.

I have put together some general yard and outdoor tips to hopefully help you get started to enjoy your outdoor space.
Grass & Yard Tips
First, let’s talk about the biggest part of your yard—the grass. Whether you have Bermuda, Fescue, St. Augustine, or another variety, each type needs slightly different spring care.
Scalp Your Lawn (If Needed)
Once the last frost has passed and you’re ready for your first cut, consider scalping your yard if your grass has gone dormant over winter. Scalping means lowering your mower blade to its lowest setting and cutting away the winter layer. This removes early weeds and lets the sun warm the soil faster. However, if your lawn stays green year-round, skip scalping and mow at your regular height.
Fertilize for a Quick Start
After mowing or scalping, fertilize your grass to give it a healthy boost. Use a high-nitrogen fertilizer for most plants and grasses. This works for trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and flowers. Follow the specific schedule for your grass type:
St. Augustine: In Texas, wait until about three weeks after it begins turning green. Usually early April works best
Bermuda: Fertilize when at least 50% green, usually late spring. Repeat every 4–6 weeks. Apply in the morning to avoid heat stress.
Fescue: Fertilize around April 1 with a slow-release 12-4-8 blend.

Prepping Groundcover

If you have groundcover like Asian Jasmine, it’s time to cut back the winter growth after your last frost. Use a weed eater or mower set to its lowest setting—just be careful around sprinkler heads. Although it may look like you’re destroying it, this cut encourages lush, healthy regrowth. Within a week or two, you’ll see light green shoots that will deepen in color as they mature.
Mulching
Now is also a great time to refresh your mulch. Not only does this improve curb appeal by reviving the color, but it also helps prevent weeds. Before spreading, pick out any existing weeds for best results. Most bags cover about two cubic feet, and you can often find them on seasonal sale.

Planting flowers
This is my favorite part of spring! If you lost plants during winter, replace them now with healthy options from your local nursery. Break up the root ball before planting to stimulate growth, and always use high-quality soil like Fox Farm, which is rich in nutrients from natural sources.
For stunning containers, follow the Thriller–Filler–Spiller method:
- Thrillers (tall, focal plants): Purple fountain grass, aztec grass, iris, topiary evergreens, ferns, snapdragons
- Fillers (medium plants): Pentas, petunias, coleus, alyssum, herbs
- Spillers (trailing plants): Variegated ivy, sweet potato vine, creeping jenny, trailing lantana
Mix colors and textures for the most eye-catching results.
Here are some great examples of potted flowers with the Thriller-Filler-Spiller technique.
