When your teenage son suddenly becomes obsessed with cars — and not just any cars, but Porsches — you can either panic… or lean in and get creative.
After giving his younger brother’s room a full personality-packed makeover last year, our son Kelton was more than ready for his turn. He wanted a room that reflected his interests. Most importantly, it needed to feel grown-up and cool — not like the Hot Wheels aisle exploded.
So, we set out to create a stylish car-themed bedroom that looked personal and elevated — without an ounce of tacky. (For tips on how to create a tasteful themed room click here).
Challenge accepted.

The Design Foundation: Mood Meets Function

Luckily, we started with a solid base. Years ago, during the viral TikTok “cloud ceiling” trend, we installed one with Govee LED lights. that’s still going strong. Not only does it still work, but it also fits perfectly with the car theme — think moody skies and night driving.
Originally, only one accent wall was painted Thunder Gray. However, for this refresh, we decided to color drench the entire room with Rainwashed, a greenish-blue shade inspired by a Porsche print we hung above the bed. As a result, the room now feels calm, cohesive, and fresh.
Working With What We Had (and Upgrading the Rest)

Because this was more of a refresh than a full renovation, we reused most of Kelton’s furniture — except for the bed.
His old bed? It had seen better days. So when the Article Cigar Leather Storage Bed went on sale, I jumped on it. It’s functional, masculine, and adds a stylish statement to the room.
In addition to that, we made budget-friendly updates: Likewise, we kept his wall shelves but painted the brackets red to match the Porsche details. Instead of replacing his nightstand, I fixed it with Gorilla Wood Glue and spray painted it red.

We also made some budget-friendly tweaks to save even more:
- Instead of replacing his nightstand, I repaired the broken drawer with Gorilla Wood Glue (my go-to for furniture fixes) and spray painted it bright red to match the subtle “car garage” vibe we were building.
- His old wall shelves? We kept the shelves themselves but painted the metal brackets red for a pop of color that ties back to the Porsche art without screaming “race car bed.”
Small Changes, Big Impact

One of Kelton’s top requests was a comfier spot to crash in the corner to chill. So we ditched the stiff leather butterfly chair in the corner and replaced it with a giant Ultimate Sack bean bag chair(4000 size, in bright red).
Best. Decision. Ever.
He actually uses it now — reading, doing homework on his laptop, or just flopping into it to nap on the weekends.
For bedding, I went with a subtle striped duvet cover and added throw pillows in yellow and dark teal to complement the new wall color.
Personal Touches: How We Pulled Off a Stylish Car-Themed Bedroom Without the Clutter
The goal wasn’t just to make it look good — it was to make it feel like his.

Some of my favorite details:

- We rearranged his shelves to showcase his LEGO car builds, especially his prized Porsche model (with working headlights).
- Decluttered old books and knick-knacks
- Made room for his tennis medals, academic awards, & trophies.
- Hung two guitars — his prized Gibson he inherited from his great-grandfather (and a newer one he bought himself) — using Amazon guitar wall hooks.
- Installed a rug that hints at roads and movement, tying back to the car theme with soft swirls and muted blue tones.
- Added a real Speed Limit 30 street sign — a fun gift from our youth minister at church — which Kelton insists is “more of a suggestion than a rule.”
- And surprised him with an authentic Porsche hood emblem, framed in a simple shadow box from Amazon.
My favorite part? The oversized Porsche art hanging above his bed. I created it in Illustrator from vintage references and had it printed large — 30″ x 40″ — for major impact. Pro tip: go big with art in teen rooms!
The End Result?
A room that feels personal, tasteful, and ready to grow with him.
Kelton loves it.
I love it.
Best of all, we successfully pulled off a car-themed room that doesn’t look like a race track exploded.
(Parents everywhere, breathe a sigh of relief.)
